Second Company MBII
Milwaukee Ballet II (MBII) is our second company made up of the next generation of dancers. During this year-long program, MBII artists train with a world-renowned faculty, perform alongside our main Company in their full length productions, and represent our organization in the community through impactful outreach programing.
Dancers from MBII are among the ranks of professional companies worldwide, including Milwaukee Ballet itself. Currently, over 60% of our Company dancers are former MBII.
Program Overview
Milwaukee Ballet II (MBII) is a unique program designed to take excellent ballet students and transform them into artists, ready for a professional career. Dancers from around the world are offered daily training with their own artistic staff led by Artistic Director Mireille Favarel (France) and Rehearsal Director Davit Hovhannisyan (Armenia). In addition to classes with the Company and artistic staff, there are multiple opportunities for master classes with visiting choreographers and guest teachers from various disciplines.
This program provides a safe place for growth, experimentation, and achievement in dance through rigorous training and performance opportunities. Developed in 1978, MBII has graduated dancers who have danced all over the country, who run their own companies and dance projects, who now make up over 60% of our own professional Company, and others who have gone on to new adventures and career paths.
Over the course of a season with MBII dancers learn to live on their own and become a strong, united team working together for shared goals and individual dreams. They learn to advocate for their art form and to work with all kinds of people. They are in an environment where they can experiment with their artistry, open their minds and push their personal boundaries. They leave being ready for the professional world—in dance and in other areas.

Toronto, Canada
Alexander Boyd-Smith started his dance training when he was 8 years old, taking private lessons with my two brothers. When they got older, they joined the community program at the National Ballet School in Toronto and danced 3 days a week. It was when Alex made his onstage debut as ‘head mouse’ in the National Ballet of Canada’s Nutcracker, that he realized he loved performing and that we wanted to pursue ballet more seriously. His mother helped create a training schedule for him that included dancing at both the Johanna Hilchie Ballet School and Stepanova Ballet Academy – where he danced the role of ‘Fritz’ in The Nutcracker for four years. Alexander won some small local competitions and even placed second in YAGP Toronto’s senior men’s division in 2018. Eventually his teachers realized that Alex needed to join a full time ballet school to get the intensive traning and partnering experience necessary for a professional career. The next year he joined the Kirov Academy in Washington DC, and danced with them for grades 11 and 12, winning the Contemporary competition and placing third in Classical at YAGP Philadelphia in 2019. He then went on to attend the Ellison Ballet Professional Training program in New York City from 2020 to 2022, in addition to attending their summer intensive for the past 6 years. He went to the YAGP Finals in Tampa during his final year with Ellison. Alex then went on to join the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida for their 2022/23 Season and got to dance great roles such as ‘Prince Ivan’ in Firebird as well as the Swan pas de deux in Doble Corchea by Vincente Nebrada. For the 2023/24 Season, Alexander returned home and danced in many amazing productions such as the Neural Ballet Provoking Ideas Festival, the Toronto International Ballet Theatre’s Nutcracker and Cinderella, and Innovative Ballet Theatre’s Greatest Love of Dance Gala. He is looking forward to joining Milwaukee Ballet’s Second Company for their upcoming 2024/25 Season.
