The Choreographers
Julia Feldman
Julia Feldman
Choreographer
Julia Feldman received her training under Pamela Hayes of Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet and began her professional career with the Sacramento Ballet in 2011, where she is currently a Company Artist.
Feldman discovered her passion for choreography through the Sacramento Ballet’s annual Beer and Ballet program, creating a new work each year since 2012. In 2019, she was selected for the National Choreographer’s Initiative in Irvine, California, under the direction of Molly Lynch. In 2021, Feldman was one of three choreographers commissioned to co-create a new Nutcracker for the Sacramento Ballet, led by Artistic Director Anthony Krutzkamp. The following year, she was selected for the New York Choreographic Institute’s Spring Session, directed by Adrian Danchig. Her first full-length commission for the Sacramento Ballet, Hearts, premiered in April 2022. Her second commission, Pockets of Light, debuted in March 2025, shortly followed by the premiere of All I See Sometimes in October 2025. In February 2026, Feldman will premiere a new work with Smuin Contemporary Ballet, led by Artistic Director Amy Seiwert.
In 2015, Feldman co-founded Capital Dance Project (CDP), a collective of professional dancers based in Sacramento, California. The company focuses on creating world premiere works in collaboration with local visual artists and musicians. Feldman has created ten works for CDP to date and plays an integral role in shaping the organization’s mission, management, and creative vision behind its annual Behind the Barre and Digital Series productions.

About the Competition
Milwaukee Ballet’s biennial Genesis International Choreographic Competition returns to The Pabst Theater March 13-15 with premieres by three emerging choreographers. The winner will earn a contract to create a second new work with Milwaukee Ballet while audiences vote on who deserves the title of “Audience Favorite.”
The choreographers are challenged to create a new work using a cast of eight randomly selected Company Artists, four women and four men each. In just three weeks—a total of 90 rehearsal hours—each will create an original 20-minute piece to present at The Pabst Theater.
The winner will be chosen by a panel of esteemed industry experts alongside Milwaukee Ballet Artistic Director Michael Pink. Audiences have the opportunity to get in on the fun by voting for their favorite of the three pieces, the winner of which will receive a cash prize.
Past Genesis winners have all gone on to establish themselves as celebrated professionals, choreographing both nationally and internationally.
