Milwaukee Ballet
July 21, 2026 / 5 mins read

July is Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate the individuality and contributions of people with disabilities while recognizing the importance of accessibility and inclusion. Adaptive arts programming strengthens communities by creating opportunities where people of all abilities can participate, connect, and feel represented.

At Milwaukee Ballet, we believe every person should have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of dance. Through adaptive programs and inclusive performances, we are proud to remove barriers, creating a more inclusive dance community where dance is for every body.

Designed for children with physical disabilities and limited mobility, Tour de Force pairs each student with a Milwaukee Ballet Company Artist in a collaborative, one-on-one environment. Working alongside physical therapists, each class is tailored to meet the unique needs of every dancer, with multiple class levels designed to support a range of abilities.

Beyond exploring movement and building confidence, this program fosters relationships and community while celebrating each dancer’s unique abilities. By removing barriers to dance participation, every dancer is empowered to express themselves through the dynamic movements of ballet.

Sensory-Friendly Performances: Making Theater More Accessible

Accessibility also extends beyond the studio with our Sensory-Friendly performances. These performances are thoughtfully adapted to create a more comfortable and inclusive theater experience for individuals with sensory processing needs. With adjusted lighting, open theater doors, and sensory support, these accommodations reduce potential sensory barriers while allowing audiences to engage with the performance in ways that best meet their needs.

By creating a welcoming performance environment, these performances allow individuals and families to experience the magic of live ballet in a space where everyone can enjoy the artistry and storytelling on stage.

GiGi's Playhouse: Expanding Opportunities Through Community Partnership

Our commitment to accessibility extends beyond our studios through community partnerships that bring adaptive ballet to more dancers. Through our partnership with GiGi's Playhouse, Milwaukee Ballet offers adaptive ballet classes for children, teens, and young adults with Down syndrome. Since beginning our partnership in 2024, dancers have explored ballet through themed workshops inspired by season productions such as The Nutcracker and ALICE (in wonderland), learning ballet technique along with the choreography of each production.

Alongside Tour de Force, this partnership expands access to ballet for more dancers to experience the self-expression and meaningful community that dance inspires.

Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the many ways people experience, create, and contribute to the arts. At Milwaukee Ballet, we remain committed to expanding access to dance through adaptive programming, inclusive performances, and community partnerships that welcome everyone.

Together, we can continue to build a more inclusive dance community where everyone can experience the artistry, expression, and sense of belonging that ballet makes possible.
